Urban Quilted Jersey Blue Polyester Viscose Elastane Knitted Diamond Quilt Fabric CU

Quilted Fabric

Quilted fabric is a pre-quilted fabric made by stitching together layers of fabric and wadding to create warmth, texture and structure. Ready to use straight from the roll, it offers the look and practicality of a quilted finish without the need to quilt the layers yourself.

Our quilted fabric collection includes plain, printed and textured designs suitable for a wide range of sewing projects. Quilted fabrics are particularly popular for jackets, gilets, coats, bags, totes, nursery items, cushion covers and other projects where warmth, padding or additional structure is required.

Available in a variety of weights, colours and patterns, quilted fabrics can be used for both practical and decorative sewing. Whether you're making outerwear, accessories or home projects, quilted fabric provides an easy way to add comfort, insulation and visual interest to your finished make.

Working with quilted fabric

Quilted fabric has a lot going for it as a project material - the warmth and texture are already built in, so you can focus on construction rather than adding interlining or padding separately. The main consideration is the extra bulk from the three layers, which requires a little adjustment to your usual sewing approach.

A heavy-duty needle handles the layers without breaking or skipping stitches. A longer stitch length (around 3mm to 4mm) gives better results through thicker fabric than a standard sewing length. If your seams will be pressed open, trim the wadding close to the stitch line before pressing to reduce bulk. For external seams on bags and jackets, a flat-felled or bound seam encases the raw edges neatly.

Quilted fabrics are most often used for outerwear - the insulating wadding layer makes them a practical choice for autumn and winter jackets, gilets and coats. They're also popular for structured bags, nursery décor, baby quilts and cushion covers, where the texture adds visual interest alongside practicality.

What is quilted fabric?

Quilted fabric is a fabric made from multiple layers that have been stitched together to create a padded, textured finish. Typically, it consists of an outer fabric, a layer of wadding and a backing fabric. Because the layers are already joined, quilted fabric is ready to use without any additional quilting.

What can I make with quilted fabric?

Quilted fabric is a versatile choice for both clothing and accessories. It is commonly used for jackets, coats, gilets, bags, totes, changing mats, nursery items, cushion covers and other projects where warmth, padding or structure is beneficial. The finished look can range from practical everyday wear to more decorative sewing projects.

Is quilted fabric difficult to sew?

Quilted fabric is generally straightforward to sew, although the added layers can make it bulkier than standard fabrics. Taking your time and using the appropriate needle for the weight of the fabric will usually produce the best results. Many dressmakers find quilted fabric easier to handle than lightweight or slippery fabrics because it is stable and holds its shape well. A heavy-duty or denim needle (size 90/14 to 100/16) handles the thickness without skipping stitches. A longer stitch length (3–4mm) works better than a short stitch through thick layers. When sewing seams, trim the wadding close to the stitching to reduce bulk before pressing or finishing the seam.

Can quilted fabric be washed?

Most quilted fabrics can be machine washed on a cool, gentle cycle. Avoid high-heat drying, as this can affect the wadding inside and cause uneven shrinkage. Always check the care recommendations on the specific fabric before washing, particularly for fabrics with a synthetic wadding layer.
