Wardrobe By Me Patterns

Wardrobe By Me Patterns

Wardrobe By Me is the Danish pattern label of Christina Albeck, who worked in the fashion industry and taught patternmaking before starting it in 2015. The clue is in the name: these are patterns for the clothes you actually wear, relaxed Scandinavian shapes designed to be made repeatedly rather than admired once. Unusually for an independent label, the range covers women, men, unisex and children.

A lot of independent pattern companies design occasion pieces. Wardrobe By Me designs the rest of the wardrobe: the everyday trousers, the jacket you reach for, the t-shirt you make five of. The aesthetic is Scandinavian in the way you'd expect, relaxed and often oversized, more interested in how a garment sits and wears than in decoration, with a workwear influence running through the jackets and trousers.

What the patterns are like

Christina Albeck's background is patternmaking rather than blogging, including teaching it, and the drafting and the instructions both benefit. Instruction booklets are substantial, illustrated with clear line drawings, and include the things that are easy to leave out: a pattern overview, cutting layouts, both body and finished garment measurements, front and back line drawings, and a fabric list with recommendations and yardages. Each pattern is rated on a simple four-point difficulty scale.

The size range is one of the broadest you'll find on an indie pattern. Women's patterns span a wide run of sizes, unisex and men's cover several X sizes in each direction, and the children's patterns run through the primary school years. Sizing follows European measurements rather than UK shop sizes, so choose from your own measurements. It's also worth knowing the women's block is drafted to a height of around 172cm, which is on the taller side, so shorter sewists may want to remove a little length through the bodice and leg.

Seam allowances are included on all pattern pieces and marked on the pieces themselves, and measurements are given in both metric and imperial.

What we're stocking at the moment

We currently carry a wide selection, covering dresses and blouses, t-shirts and tops, trousers, shorts and skirts, jackets and coats, sweatshirts and hoodies, pyjamas and hats, together with a good run of the men's and unisex patterns. The grid above is the definitive list of what's in stock today.

Sew-alongs and support

Most patterns have a video sew-along available free on the Wardrobe By Me channel, along with technique and fabric tutorials. If a step in the booklet isn't clear, that's the first place to look.

What sizes do Wardrobe By Me patterns come in?

The size range is one of the broadest among independent pattern companies. Women's patterns cover a wide run of sizes, the unisex and men's patterns span several X sizes in each direction, and there's a children's range through the primary school years. Sizing is based on European measurements rather than UK shop sizes, so always choose from your body measurements and check the finished garment measurements too.

Does Wardrobe By Me do men's patterns?

Yes, and it's unusual among independent pattern companies to have as many. The men's and unisex range covers shirts, trousers and shorts, jackets and vests, sweatshirts, hoodies and pyjamas, drafted properly for a men's block rather than being a women's pattern with the shaping removed. There are children's patterns as well.

Are Wardrobe By Me patterns good for beginners?

Many of them are. The relaxed, often oversized shapes mean fitting is forgiving, and the instruction booklets are thorough, with cutting layouts, line drawings and full measurement charts. Every pattern is rated on a four-point difficulty scale, and there's a collection of easier patterns to start from. Video sew-alongs are available free for most patterns if you'd rather follow along than read.

Are seam allowances included?

Yes, on all pattern pieces, and they're marked on the pieces themselves rather than only mentioned in the instructions, which makes them easy to check as you cut. The amount used is stated in the sewing guidelines for each pattern. Measurements throughout are given in both metric and imperial, so you can work in whichever you're comfortable with.
