What's the difference between interfacing and stabiliser?

Interfacing becomes part of the finished project. It's used to add structure, support and shape to areas such as collars, cuffs, waistbands, pockets and bag panels.

Stabiliser is usually temporary. It's used during embroidery, appliqué and decorative stitching to stop fabric stretching or puckering while you sew. Once the stitching is complete, the stabiliser is normally torn away, cut away or washed away.

A simple way to think about it: interfacing stays in, stabiliser comes out.

What type of stabiliser do I need?
  • Tear-away stabiliser – ideal for stable woven fabrics and general embroidery.
  • Cut-away stabiliser – best for stretchy fabrics and dense embroidery designs.
  • Wash-away stabiliser – dissolves in water and is ideal for lace, freestanding embroidery and delicate fabrics.
What's the difference between tear-away and wash-away stabilisers?

Tear-away stabilisers are removed by carefully tearing away the excess once stitching is complete. Wash-away stabilisers dissolve in water, making them ideal for lace work, freestanding embroidery and projects where no backing should remain visible.
