Rose & Hubble Fabric

Rose & Hubble occupy a useful middle ground. Their cottons are good enough for dressmaking and priced for craft, which is why the same bolt tends to end up in a quilt, a bunting run and a child's pinafore. The prints lean classic rather than fashionable: spots, florals, ginghams, small repeating designs that don't date and don't fight the thing you're making.

The practical argument for buying within one range rather than piecing it together across shops is consistency. The base cloth, the weight and the finish stay the same across colourways, so a project using four or five shades behaves identically across all of them: same shrinkage, same press, same handle. That matters more than it sounds when you're cutting patchwork, bunting, or a dress with contrast facings.

What we're stocking at the moment

Our current Rose & Hubble range centres on The Crafty Spot, a 110cm wide, 100% cotton poplin at 130gsm, with classic white spots on a coloured ground. We hold it in over twenty colourways: neutrals in Soft White, Silver, Grey and Taupe, brights in Cerise, Lipstick, Red, Yellow and Aqua, softer shades in Baby Pink, Dusky Pink, Mint, Ice Green and Pale Blue, and deeper tones in Dark Navy, Light Navy, Purple, Sienna and Ochre. There's an All Colours multicoloured version too. It's certified to OEKO-Tex Standard 100, worth knowing if you're sewing for babies or small children.

That's a lightweight poplin: crisp enough to hold a gathered skirt or a sharp collar, light enough not to add bulk in a bag lining. What it's good for

Dressmaking with a retro leaning, particularly full-skirted dresses, blouses and children's clothes. Quilting and patchwork, where a consistent weight across colourways makes piecing predictable. Craft work of every kind: bunting, bags, aprons, pouches, dolls' clothes. And facings, linings and bindings, where a print on the inside of a plain garment is a nice thing to find.

Sewing it is uncomplicated. Stable woven cotton takes a universal needle and standard cotton thread. Prewash before cutting to allow for shrinkage, then wash at 30 or 40 degrees unless the care label states otherwise. It presses well and takes a crease, so it's forgiving if you're still building confidence.
