Maison Fauve Patterns

Maison Fauve Patterns

Maison Fauve is a French pattern house founded in 2015 by Emilie Faurie, working out of Lunel in the south of France. The name nods to Les Fauves, the painters who threw colour and boldness at the canvas, and the patterns carry something of that: strong lines, considered detail, and a habit of building each season around a distinct theme. The range covers dresses, blouses, trousers, coats, jackets and more.

Maison Fauve patterns are recognisable before you open the envelope. The packaging is designed as carefully as the garment inside, each season built around a theme with artwork to match, and the design signature runs to the sort of detail that makes a simple shape interesting: a pleat placed just so, a shoulder line with a particular roundness, a bold seam where you wouldn't expect one.

What makes them different to sew

Two practical things set these apart, and both save time. First, the pattern sheets are printed ready to use, with the pieces laid out so they don't overlap. There's no tracing: you cut straight into the sheet. Second, the paper is heavy, printed on a sturdy stock rather than tissue, which means the pieces survive being pinned, folded and used repeatedly rather than tearing the third time you reach for them. If you've ever fought with a flimsy tissue pattern, the difference is immediate.

Seam allowances are included on all their patterns, at 1cm unless the booklet says otherwise, and hem allowances are included too. Instructions come as a printed booklet illustrated with technical diagrams, translated into English. Each pattern is marked beginner, intermediate or advanced, and Maison Fauve deliberately builds an optional step up in technique into some of the simpler patterns so there's somewhere to progress to.

French sizing, and what it means for fit

Sizing is French and given in centimetres, typically running from a size 34 upwards, with some patterns extending further. Two things are worth knowing. French pattern sizes don't correspond to UK dress sizes, so always choose from your body measurements against the chart rather than from the number. And the block is drafted to a height of around 165cm, which is shorter than a lot of UK and US drafting, so if you're taller than average you may want to add length through the bodice and the leg. Maison Fauve publish a free made-to-measure adjustment guide covering that and other common alterations.

What we're stocking at the moment

We carry a wide selection across the range, including tops and blouses, dresses, skirts and trousers, jackets and coats, jumpsuits, sweatshirts, pyjamas and shorts. The grid above is the definitive list of what's in stock today.

Are Maison Fauve instructions in English?

Yes. The patterns are French and the brand is based in France, but the instruction booklets supplied with the patterns are translated into English, and they're illustrated with technical diagrams throughout so the steps are clear even where the wording is brief. Maison Fauve also publish video tutorials for most patterns on their own channel.

Do Maison Fauve patterns need tracing?

No, and it's one of the nicest things about them. The pattern pieces are printed so that they don't overlap on the sheet, which means you can cut straight into it rather than tracing off first. The paper is a heavy, sturdy stock rather than tissue, so the pieces stand up to being pinned, folded and reused rather than tearing after a couple of makes.

How does French sizing compare to UK sizing?

It doesn't map directly, so don't choose by the number. French pattern sizes typically start at 34 and run up in twos, and you should pick yours from your body measurements against the chart on the envelope. It's also worth knowing that the block is drafted to a height of around 165cm, so if you're taller than that you may need to add length through the bodice and the trouser leg.

Are seam allowances included on Maison Fauve patterns?

Yes, on all of them. The standard is 1cm unless the instruction booklet states otherwise for a particular pattern or seam, and hem allowances are included as well. Check the booklet at the start rather than assuming, since some patterns use a different allowance in places, particularly on curved seams and facings.

Are Maison Fauve patterns good for beginners?

Some are, and the range is marked beginner, intermediate or advanced so you can tell before you buy. The brand deliberately builds an optional more advanced technique into some of the simpler patterns, so there's room to stretch yourself without moving to a harder pattern. The clear diagrams and video tutorials make them approachable even where the design looks involved.
