What is the difference between tartan and check?
Tartan is a traditional woven pattern made from intersecting coloured stripes that form a repeated sett. Check fabrics use a similar grid structure but are often simpler in design, such as Prince of Wales or windowpane patterns.
Is wool tartan suitable for dressmaking?
Yes. Wool tartan and check fabrics are commonly used for skirts, dresses, trousers and tailored jackets. Heavier weights are also suitable for coats.
What can I make with wool check fabric?
Wool checks work well for suiting, structured skirts, winter dresses and statement outerwear. The pattern definition makes them particularly suited to classic tailoring styles.
