Double Gauze Fabric

Double gauze is a soft, breathable cotton made from two fine layers held together with tiny tacking stitches, giving it a gentle crinkle and a wonderfully cuddly feel. It's a favourite for summer dresses, blouses, baby clothes and swaddles.

Our collection covers plains, checks, stripes, prints and embroidered designs, almost all 100% cotton. Order a sample to feel the texture before you buy.

Double gauze is made from two very fine layers of cotton gauze invisibly tacked together at regular intervals. The looser weave and double layer give it a soft, airy handle with a light crinkle, more substantial than single gauze or muslin but just as breathable. That combination of softness and breathability is why it's so popular for warm-weather and baby sewing.

Double gauze and muslin

Double gauze is often compared to muslin because both have a crinkled texture, but double gauze is two layers tacked together, which makes it more substantial and less sheer than a single layer of muslin. That extra body means it works for garments as well as the swaddles and blankets muslin is known for, while keeping the same soft, breathable feel.

What to make with double gauze

  • Summer clothing: easy dresses, blouses, shirts and tunics with a relaxed drape.
  • Children's wear: soft, comfortable rompers, skirts and tops.
  • Baby essentials: swaddle blankets, bibs, comforters and lightweight quilts, gentle against delicate skin.

Sewing with double gauze

The two layers can shift slightly, so plenty of pins or clips help keep things aligned, and a walking foot is useful. It can fray, so finish the seams neatly. Lighter colours can be a little see-through, so consider lining fitted dresses and skirts. Pre-wash before cutting to bring out the signature crinkle and allow for shrinkage, then press while slightly damp if you prefer a smoother finish, unless the care label states otherwise.

What is double gauze and is it the same as muslin?

Double gauze is two fine layers of cotton gauze tacked together with tiny invisible stitches, giving a soft, crinkled, breathable fabric. It's related to muslin but more substantial and less sheer, because muslin is usually a single layer. The extra body means double gauze works well for clothing as well as baby items.

Is double gauze see-through, and does a dress need lining?

Double gauze is less sheer than single-layer muslin, but lighter and paler colours can still be a little see-through. For fitted dresses and skirts, lining gives better coverage and a nicer hang, while looser tops and children's wear are often fine unlined. Hold a sample to the light if you're unsure.

Does double gauze shrink and crinkle after washing?

Yes. Pre-washing brings out double gauze's signature soft crinkle and allows for shrinkage, so we recommend washing before you cut, unless the care label advises otherwise. If you prefer a smoother look, you can press it while slightly damp, though many people love the relaxed crinkled texture.

Is double gauze hard to sew?

It's beginner-friendly but does have a couple of quirks: the two layers can shift, so use plenty of pins or clips and a walking foot if you have one, and finish the seams as it can fray. Otherwise it sews much like a soft, light cotton.

Is double gauze good for babies and summer?

Very much so. It's soft, lightweight and breathable, which makes it gentle against delicate skin and comfortable in warm weather. It's a popular choice for swaddle blankets, bibs and baby clothes, as well as easy summer dresses, blouses and children's wear.
