Dressmaking needles come in a wide range of sizes, from thin to thick. The size of the needle you use will depend on the fabric you're sewing. For example, 70/10 needles are made to sew fine, lightweight fabrics like chiffon, satin, and organza. These are ideal for formal wear. 80/12 needles are appropriate to sew lightweight fabrics like lawn, faille, and georgette. If you're unsure what size needle to use, it's always best to err on the side of a smaller needle. You can always switch to a larger one if needed. In addition to dressmaking needles, there are also sewing machine needles and hand sewing needles.

The size number works the same way regardless of type - the lower the number, the thinner the needle shaft. So when you're choosing dressmaking needles, keep in mind the type of fabric you'll be working with and choose accordingly.

What type of sewing needle do I need?

The best needle depends on your fabric and sewing method. Universal needles suit many woven fabrics, while jersey, stretch, denim, embroidery and overlocker needles are designed for specific materials and techniques.

Can I use the same needle for all fabrics?

Universal needles are versatile, but specialist fabrics often sew better with the correct needle. For example, jersey needles are ideal for knit fabrics, while denim needles are designed for heavier woven materials.
