Lightweight denim, generally under 8oz, is softer and more fluid than heavy jeans denim, with the same classic look. It's ideal for shirts, shirt dresses, skirts and relaxed trousers where you want drape rather than stiffness.
This collection sits alongside our chambray range and includes plain, stretch and printed options. For heavier weights, browse all denim fabrics. Order a sample to check the weight and wash.

Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz), and it's the single most useful thing to get right. Lightweight denim, broadly anything under 8oz (around 135gsm to 270gsm), drapes more softly than the mid and heavy denims used for jeans, which makes it better suited to shirts, dresses and softer trousers. This collection is organised around that lighter end of the range.
For jeans, jackets and structured pieces you'll want a heavier denim, which you'll find in our main denim collection.
This collection deliberately includes lightweight denim and chambray side by side, as both give that soft, faded blue look at a wearable weight. Denim is a twill weave with subtle diagonal lines, while chambray is plain-woven and even softer. You'll also find stretch denims with a little elastane for a closer fit, and some printed and floral chambrays for something different.
Lighter denims sew easily on a domestic machine. A denim or jeans needle gives the cleanest stitches, and topstitching thread suits the classic denim look. Indigo dye can rub off, or crock, and cotton denim may shrink, so pre-wash and dry the fabric the way you'll treat the garment before cutting, unless the care label states otherwise. If you want a closer fit, choose a stretch denim and check the fibre content on the product page.
For shirts, blouses and shirt dresses, the lightest 4oz to 6oz denims give the best drape. For skirts, dresses and softer trousers that need a touch more body, look at 6oz to 8oz. Anything heavier is better suited to jeans and jackets. The weight is listed on each product page.
Both give a soft blue, faded look at a light weight, but denim is woven as a twill with subtle diagonal lines, while chambray is plain-woven and even softer. Denim has a touch more structure; chambray drapes a little more freely. This collection includes both so you can compare.
Cotton denim can shrink on the first wash, and indigo dye can rub off slightly, known as crocking, especially on darker, raw denims. Pre-washing and drying the fabric the way you'll care for the garment before cutting settles both, unless the care label advises otherwise.
Some pieces are. The collection includes stretch denims blended with a little elastane for a closer, more comfortable fit, as well as non-stretch cotton denims. If you want give, check the fibre content on the product page before buying.
A denim or jeans needle gives the cleanest results, even on lighter weights, as it's designed for the tight twill weave. Standard thread is fine for construction, while topstitching thread in a contrast colour gives the classic denim finish on hems, seams and pockets.
