Seersucker Fabric

Seersucker Fabric

Seersucker is a puckered cotton fabric with a permanently crinkled texture that holds it slightly off the skin, so it feels cool and rarely needs ironing. It's a summer favourite for dresses, shirts, shorts and children's clothes.

This collection covers woven stripes and checks, plain crinkle seersucker, crisper cotton-poplin seersucker and pretty floral prints, with several Italian and Austrian-made pieces alongside our everyday cottons. Order a sample to feel the texture for yourself.

Seersucker is woven so that some threads are held tight and others are left slack, which pulls the loose threads into the raised, puckered ridges the fabric is known for. Because the texture is woven in rather than pressed on, it doesn't flatten out in the wash. That puckering lifts the cloth away from the skin, letting air move underneath, which is exactly why seersucker has long been a warm-weather choice.

Why seersucker rarely needs ironing

The crinkle is permanent, so creases simply blend into the existing texture instead of standing out. For most makes you can wash, dry and wear seersucker straight away with little or no pressing, which makes it a practical pick for holiday clothes and busy family wardrobes. Always check the individual product page or care label, as printed and blended seersuckers can vary.

Types of seersucker in this collection

  • Striped and check seersucker: classic woven stripes and gingham-style checks, the traditional seersucker look.
  • Plain and crinkle seersucker: solid colours with the textured pucker, easy to mix and match.
  • Cotton-poplin seersucker: a crisper poplin base with the seersucker texture, including some brighter and neon shades.
  • Printed seersucker: florals such as our Botanical and Cottage Garden designs for a softer, decorative finish.

Sewing with seersucker

Seersucker is light and easy to sew, but the texture means it can shift slightly, so plenty of pins or clips help. If you're using a stripe or check, take a little extra care to match the lines across seams, and buy a touch more fabric to allow for it. As a cotton it can shrink on the first wash, so pre-wash and dry it the way you plan to care for the garment before cutting, unless the care label states otherwise. It's a natural fit for summer dresses, shirts, loose trousers, shorts, children's clothes and even bedding.

What is seersucker fabric?

Seersucker is a lightweight fabric, usually cotton, with a distinctive puckered or crinkled texture woven into it. The raised ridges hold the cloth slightly away from the skin, which makes it feel cool and breathable. It's most often used for summer clothing such as dresses, shirts and shorts.

Why is seersucker puckered?

The pucker is created during weaving. Some threads are held under tension while others are left slack, which bunches the slack threads into raised ridges. Because the texture is built into the weave rather than pressed in, it stays put through washing and wear.

Is seersucker cool to wear in summer?

Yes. The puckered texture lifts the fabric off the skin so air can circulate underneath, and as a breathable cotton it helps you stay comfortable in warm weather. That combination is the main reason seersucker is such a popular summer fabric.

Do you need to iron seersucker?

Usually very little. The permanent crinkle hides creases, so most seersucker can be washed, dried and worn with no pressing. If you prefer, a cool iron is fine, but avoid pressing the texture flat. Check the individual product page or care label, as printed and blended versions can differ.

Does seersucker shrink and should I pre-wash it?

Cotton seersucker can shrink slightly on its first wash. We recommend pre-washing and drying it the same way you plan to care for the finished garment before cutting, unless the care label advises otherwise. This keeps the texture and your measurements consistent.
