The History of Croft Mill - Our Story of Supplying Fabrics
The Early Years
Croft Mill UK Ltd comprises all the good old names of mail order fabrics. J. W Coates, Bradley Textiles and of course Croft Mill itself. We go way back to when a good night out cost less than 10 ‘bob’ and fabric remnants were sold in bundles. When there was a mill at the end of each street in this part of Lancashire and tripe and onions were part of the everyday diet. Not on a Michelin starred menu.
Bradley textiles started in 1927 so that gives you an idea of how old this business is. Croft Mill is the original mail order fabric supplier. Long before the age of the internet we supplied tens of thousands of home sewers and businesses. Sending fashion and craft fabrics chosen from Alan's much-loved catalogue.
The Digital Age
After 35 years at Croft Mill, Alan retired in 2008. It is still a family affair though. Caroline took the job on after things didn't exactly go to plan after the birth of her first child. The plan to revive Croft Mill came about when she lost her job on maternity leave in early 2009.
It certainly made a change from designing printed fabric and travelling the world to oversee cloth production. But, with babe in arms the new chapter of Croft Mill began.
Our aim remains the same. To give you friendly and helpful service. To supply you with interesting and beautiful fabrics. To give you clear and honest descriptions of the fabrics. To give you the best price we can.
Our Fabrics and Products
We source from both local and international designers and manufacturers to bring you amazing and unique stock. A lot of our fabric is manufacturing ends and sampling lengths. This comes from both the top end and high street designers so our stock changes all the time. You will find something on our website one week, that may be gone the next.
The country of origin is diverse, Wool from the UK and Italy. Cotton trousering from Germany and Portugal. Dress fabric from the above plus France and Spain and of course, the Far East. Craft Fabric from Japan and Indonesia. Cotton dress fabric from Thailand. The list goes on.......
We sell more and more haberdashery, not like the huge bargain bags of stuff we did in the 80's but we have good quality Moon thread as standard when you request matching thread, anti static dress lining, fusible and non fusible interfacing, trims and ribbon, zips and lots more.
We welcome all feedback, if you need to get in touch please call us on 01282 859281, or email Info@croftmill.co.uk and we will be happy to help.
