Black is the most widely bought fabric colour, and it's easy to see why. It works for formal and casual wear, reads elegantly in photographs, pairs with every other colour, and rarely dates. A good black fabric is a wardrobe staple, both to wear and to sew.

Types of black fabric

Black cotton fabric is the starting point for most makers. Black cotton poplin is crisp, stable, and easy to cut and sew, making it reliable for shirts, skirts, and children's clothes. Cotton lawn is finer and more fluid, ideal for blouses and lightweight summer dresses. Cotton jersey is comfortable and stretchy, a go-to for t-shirts, fitted dresses, and everyday basics.

Black linen fabric offers natural texture and breathability. It's an excellent choice for wide-leg trousers, summer blazers, and relaxed dresses. It softens beautifully with washing and gets better over time.

Black satin and crepe suit dressier projects. Satin's smooth surface reflects light cleanly and works well for eveningwear, linings, and occasion pieces. Crepe drapes fluidly and is one of the most versatile fabrics for fitted dresses and structured trousers.

Black velvet adds depth and luxury to any make. Popular for occasion wear, theatrical costumes, and craft projects. It requires a little extra care when cutting and sewing, but the result is worth it.

Black jersey is practical and comfortable. French terry and sweatshirting work well for loungewear and sportswear, whilst lighter jerseys suit fitted garments and knit-style patterns.

What to make with black fabric

Black is the natural home of the little black dress, but it goes far beyond that. Tailored trousers, wrap dresses, evening skirts, structured blazers, and casual tees all translate well in black. It's also a popular choice for linings, where a neat black finish looks professional and doesn't show wear.

Tips for sewing with black fabric

Black fabric can be harder to see against a dark machine bed. Place a sheet of white paper under the presser foot area to make your seam line visible. Use good-quality black thread, and mark with chalk or a light tailor's marker. Press carefully as iron shine shows more on dark fabrics.

Is black fabric harder to sew than lighter colours?

It's a little harder to see your seam lines, but not significantly more difficult to sew. Good lighting, a sheet of white paper under your work, and light-coloured chalk markers all help. The upside is that small mistakes are less visible on black than on pale or white fabrics.

How do I stop black fabric from fading?

Wash black fabric inside out in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle. Use a detergent designed for dark clothing, and avoid tumble drying where possible. Air drying away from direct sunlight keeps the colour rich for longer.
