Canvas Fabric

Canvas Fabric

Canvas fabric is a durable woven fabric valued for its strength, versatility and long-lasting performance. Available in a variety of weights and fibre compositions, including cotton canvas and specialist coated fabrics, canvas is suitable for projects that require structure, stability and resilience.

Our canvas fabric collection includes fabrics suitable for bags, totes, workwear, jackets, trousers, craft projects and home sewing. You'll also find options designed for outdoor use, including waterproof and water-resistant canvas fabrics, alongside printed and plain canvases in a range of colours and finishes.

The weight of the canvas will often determine the best use. Lighter-weight canvases work well for garments, aprons and craft projects, while heavier qualities are ideal for bags, upholstery projects, outdoor furnishings and applications where extra durability is needed. Many canvas fabrics offer excellent structure without the excessive stiffness associated with heavier industrial fabrics.

Choosing and sewing canvas fabric

Canvas is one of the most practical fabrics in any sewist's toolkit for projects that need to hold up to regular use. Its tight plain weave and firm hand make it significantly more durable than standard dressmaking fabrics, which is why it's the go-to choice for bags, totes, workwear and outdoor projects.

When sewing canvas, a heavy-duty needle (size 100/16 or 110/18) is recommended to handle the fabric's weight without skipping stitches. A longer stitch length (3-4mm) works better than a standard setting, and a walking foot can help feed multiple layers evenly through the machine. Finishing seams by folding and topstitching rather than overlocking will give the strongest, most durable result.

For outdoor canvas projects, pre-washing is particularly important - cotton canvas can shrink significantly on the first wash. Waterproof canvas should not be machine washed unless the care label specifies it's safe to do so, as washing can strip or degrade the waterproof coating.

What is canvas fabric made from?

Canvas is most commonly made from 100% cotton, though polyester and cotton-poly blends are also used, particularly for outdoor and waterproof applications. The defining characteristic is the tight plain weave construction, which gives canvas its strength and durability regardless of the fibre content.

What is the difference between canvas and denim?

Both are heavy-duty woven fabrics, but they have different constructions. Canvas uses a plain weave, which gives it a flat, uniform surface. Denim uses a twill weave, which creates the diagonal rib you can see on the back of jeans fabric. Denim tends to be softer and more suitable for garment construction; canvas is stiffer and more structured, making it better suited to bags, outerwear and outdoor projects.

Can canvas fabric be used for dressmaking?

Yes, though it's best suited to structured garments rather than draped or fitted styles. Canvas works well for structured jackets, overalls, aprons and workwear-style trousers. It's also used as an interlining in tailored garments to give shape and body to the outer fabric.

Is waterproof canvas fabric available at Croft Mill?

Yes, our canvas collection often includes waterproof and water-resistant canvas fabrics alongside standard cotton canvas. These fabrics are popular for outdoor projects, bags, covers and other applications where additional weather protection is useful. Individual product descriptions will explain any coatings or treatments applied to the fabric.
