One of the questions we're asked most often is the difference between standard cotton lawn and pima cotton lawn. Both are lightweight cotton fabrics with a smooth finish and fine handle, making them ideal for dresses, blouses, shirts and children's clothing.
Pima cotton lawn is woven from extra-long staple cotton fibres, which produce a fabric that is exceptionally soft, smooth and durable. It feels luxurious against the skin and has a refined finish that many dressmakers compare to far more expensive fabrics. If you're sewing garments that will be worn close to the skin, pima cotton lawn is a lovely choice.
Standard cotton lawn remains one of the most versatile dressmaking fabrics available. It offers the same lightweight comfort and breathable qualities that make lawn so popular, while providing excellent value and a huge variety of colours and prints for everyday sewing projects.
Whichever you choose, cotton lawn fabrics are comfortable to wear, easy to care for and particularly well suited to warm-weather dressmaking. If you're unsure which option is right for your project, ordering a sample can help you compare the handle and finish before buying a larger length.
Cotton lawn is a fine, plain-weave cotton with a high thread count, giving it a smooth, soft handle and a slightly sheer quality. It's lighter than poplin but heavier than voile, sitting in the mid-range of lightweight cottons. The high thread count gives it a silky feel unusual for a cotton fabric, which is why it's popular for blouses, dresses and children's wear where comfort against the skin matters.
Pima cotton is made from extra-long staple fibres, giving it a notably softer, finer feel than standard cotton lawn. It's often compared to Egyptian cotton in quality. Pima lawn has a beautiful drape and is almost silky to the touch - ideal for dresses and blouses where you want the finest possible finish. Standard cotton lawn is excellent quality in its own right, but pima adds an extra level of softness and lustre.
Cotton lawn is manageable for beginners with a little preparation. It's lightweight and can shift slightly during cutting - using pattern weights and cutting in a single layer (rather than folded) helps with accuracy. A fine needle (size 70/10 or 75/11) prevents snags, and a shorter stitch length gives better control on delicate seams.
Yes, cotton lawn is an excellent natural-fibre lining. Its fine, smooth surface sits comfortably against the skin, and it adds a breathable layer without significant weight. It's particularly popular as a lining for embroidered and semi-sheer fabrics like broderie anglaise, as well as for lining structured cotton and linen garments.
