Denim fabric, as we all know, was born out of the Wild West. It was produced as a working cloth here in Lancashire until the 1980s, just down the road from where we are now. Over time, denim has evolved into a fashion staple. The addition of other yarns and elastane gives denim greater flexibility and comfort.

Denim Fabric Weight Guide

Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz) or grams per square metre (gsm). While classifications can vary slightly across the industry, the ranges below reflect standard dressmaking fabric weights used by UK retailers.

  • Lightweight Denim: Under 8oz (under 270gsm) – suitable for shirts, dresses and softer garments.
  • Mid-Weight Denim: 8oz–11oz (270gsm–370gsm) – classic dressmaking jeans weight.
  • Heavy-Weight Denim: 12oz+ (400gsm+) – ideal for traditional jeans and structured styles.
