Green has quietly become one of the most-sewn colours, and it's easy to see why. It sits naturally against denim, cream, tan and navy, flatters most skin tones, and carries a project from high summer to deep winter depending on the shade. From fresh mint and sage to khaki, olive, forest and bottle, green covers more ground than almost any other colour, which is part of the appeal and part of the challenge when matching shades.

Types of green fabric

Green cotton and linen are the summer staples. Cotton lawn, poplin and canvas suit everything from blouses to structured skirts and bags, whilst linen brings natural texture and breathability for relaxed dresses and wide-leg trousers. Both come in the widest spread of greens, from pale sage to vivid emerald.

Green wool and coating bring warmth and a sharp line, ideal for jackets, coats and tailored trousers. Forest and bottle green wool press well and wear for years.

Green velvet and corduroy add texture and depth, popular for occasion wear, festive makes and autumn sewing. Both reward a little extra care when cutting and pressing.

Green jersey and viscose are the comfortable, fluid options for t-shirts, fitted dresses and draped styles.

Waxed cotton and canvas are the hard-wearing, water-resistant choice in bottle and dark green, made for outdoor jackets, aprons and bags.

Choosing and sewing green fabric

Green is one of the trickiest colours to match by screen alone, as sage, olive and khaki can read very differently in daylight versus artificial light. If you're matching to an existing garment or trim, order a sample and check it in natural light before cutting. Greens can also vary between dye lots, so buy enough for your whole project in one go. For waxed cotton, press with a cool iron and a cloth, and avoid soaking. Always follow the individual product's care guidance, as this varies by fabric.
