Lace and net - what's the difference?

Lace is an openwork fabric with decorative patterns, from delicate florals to bold corded and guipure designs. Net and tulle are fine mesh fabrics, plainer and more structural, used to add volume, support and shape. Lace tends to be the feature; net is often the underpinning, though plain net and tulle are decorative in their own right for veils, skirts and overlays.

Sewing with lace and net

Sheer laces and nets are often layered over a lining for coverage and to show the pattern at its best. Position scalloped edges thoughtfully so they fall along hems and necklines. Use fine pins and a fine needle to avoid snagging, and a longer stitch on delicate nets. Stretch lace needs a stretch stitch and a ballpoint needle.
