Why Fabric Choice Matters in Dressmaking

Ask any Sewing Bee contestant and they'll tell you that choosing the right fabric can be just as important as choosing the right pattern. The same design can look completely different depending on the cloth you use. A simple shirt pattern might feel crisp and smart in cotton poplin, relaxed in linen or soft and flowing in viscose.

Over the years we've watched contestants transform everyday fabrics into garments that look completely different from what was originally imagined. That's often the magic of dressmaking. A fabric that looks unremarkable on the roll can become a favourite dress, a well-worn jacket or a wardrobe staple with the right pattern behind it.

Many of the fabrics featured in this collection are the same types of cloth regularly seen throughout the series. Cotton lawns for detailed sewing, printed viscose for statement dresses, denim for practical garments, wool suitings for tailoring challenges and stretch jerseys for comfortable everyday wear all appear time and time again because they work.

If you're making your first garment, don't feel pressured to start with the trickiest fabric in the room. Stable woven fabrics such as cotton poplin, chambray and lightweight denim are often far more forgiving than slippery satins or very stretchy knits. Starting with a fabric that is easy to handle can make the whole sewing experience much more enjoyable.
