White Fabric

White is where most sewing projects start, and it's rarely as simple as one shade. Our white fabric collection runs from crisp cotton poplin and fine lawn through to broderie anglaise, double gauze, soft jersey and lace, in both bright white and warmer ivory. White is the blank canvas of dressmaking. It suits almost every season and project, takes trims and detailing cleanly, and reads fresh in everything from tailored shirts to floaty summer dresses. It's also the natural home of occasion sewing: bridal, christening gowns, communion dresses and crisp shirting all start here. The one thing to plan for is opacity, which comes down to the weight and weave of the fabric rather than the colour itself.

You'll find plain and textured cottons across a range of weights, alongside jersey, lace and lining, so whether you're making something structured or soft and sheer, there's an option here. Types of white fabric

White cotton fabric covers most everyday makes. Cotton poplin and shirting are crisp and stable, ideal for shirts, blouses and structured skirts. Cotton lawn is finer and more fluid, perfect for lightweight summer dresses. For texture, broderie anglaise, Swiss dot and double gauze add detail whilst staying breathable.

White linen and cheesecloth bring natural texture and breathability, well suited to relaxed summer dresses, wide-leg trousers and loose shirts. They soften with every wash.

White jersey is the comfortable, stretchy choice for t-shirts, base layers and fitted dresses. Interlock and rib knits hold their shape, whilst lighter jerseys suit draped, knit-style patterns.

White lace and broderie anglaise suit occasion and bridal sewing, adding decoration without much weight. They pair well with a plain lining underneath.

White lining sits behind everything else. A neat lining adds opacity to sheer fabrics and gives dresses, skirts and jackets a clean, finished look.

Sewing and caring for white fabric

White shows everything, so cut on a clean surface and keep your hands and machine free of oil and chalk dust. If a single layer looks see-through, hold it up to the light before cutting: lining or underlining solves most show-through. To keep white looking bright, wash separately from colours, use a detergent suited to whites, and dry away from direct heat, which can yellow some fibres over time. Always follow the individual product's care guidance, as this varies by fabric.
