Faux leather has come a long way. Today's coated and bonded fabrics have the supple handle and finish of real leather and suede, but they cut and sew more predictably, cost far less and use no animal products. The result is a fabric that gives a garment or accessory an instant lift, whether that's a sharp biker jacket or a simple pull-on skirt.

The collection covers a few distinct finishes. Soft-backed faux leather is the everyday workhorse, supple and easy to handle across a range of colours. Stretch faux leather adds give for close-fitting skirts, trousers and leggings, while metallic finishes bring a bit of shine for occasion pieces. Faux suede and suedette have the soft, matte nap of real suede, and fur- and sherpa-backed styles add warmth for coats and cosy details. Most are 144cm or wider, so a metre goes a fair way.

What to make with faux leather and suede

Jackets and waistcoats are the classic use, especially in soft-backed and stretch faux leather. Skirts and trousers work well in the stretch finishes, which move with you. Bags, pouches and accessory panels suit the firmer coated fabrics, and metallic and animal-print styles make a statement on occasion pieces. Fur-backed faux leather is lovely for warm coats and collar or cuff details.

Sewing with faux leather and suede

One rule saves a project: don't pin within the seam, as the holes are permanent. Use clips, or pin only inside the seam allowance. A leather or Microtex needle, a longer stitch length and a walking or Teflon foot stop the fabric dragging and skipping stitches. Avoid backstitching, which perforates the fabric, and tie off your threads instead. Faux suede has a nap, so cut all your pieces in the same direction for an even colour. Press with a low heat and a cloth, and check the individual product page for care, as coated leathers usually wipe clean while sueded finishes prefer a gentle wash.

What's the difference between faux leather, pleather and vegan leather?

They're all the same idea: a synthetic, animal-free fabric coated or bonded to look and feel like leather. Pleather and vegan leather are just other names for faux leather. Faux suede, sometimes called suedette, is the matte, sueded version with a soft nap rather than a smooth leather finish.

Can you sew faux leather on a normal machine?

Yes. Use a leather or Microtex needle, a longer stitch length and a walking or Teflon foot so the fabric feeds smoothly. Hold seams with clips rather than pins, since pin holes are permanent, and avoid backstitching, which perforates the fabric; tie off your threads instead.

What can I make with faux leather and suede?

Jackets and waistcoats are the classic makes, along with skirts and trousers in the stretch finishes, and bags and accessory panels in the firmer coated fabrics. Metallic and animal-print styles suit occasion pieces, and fur-backed faux leather works well for warm coats and collar or cuff details.

Is faux leather vegan?

Yes. Faux leather and faux suede are made from synthetic, plant-free or petroleum-based coatings on a fabric backing, with no animal products, which is why they're a popular vegan alternative to real leather and suede.

Can I order a sample before buying?

Yes. Most fabrics are available as a sample so you can check the weight, finish and colour before committing to a full cut. Use the Order Sample option on the product page.
