Fibre Mood Patterns & Magazines

Fibre Mood is a Belgian sewing brand that publishes its patterns as a magazine rather than in envelopes. Each edition combines fashion editorial with a set of full-size pull-out pattern sheets, so one issue gives you a dozen or so designs for the price of a single indie pattern. The styling is contemporary and trend-led, drawn from a Belgian fashion sensibility, and the range spans dresses, tops, knitwear, trousers, coats and accessories.

The magazine format is the thing that makes Fibre Mood different, and it's either exactly what you want or not for you at all. Instead of buying one pattern in one envelope, you buy an edition containing around a dozen designs on shared full-size sheets, which works out at a fraction of the usual cost per pattern. The trade-off is that the pattern lines overlap on the sheets, so you trace the size and design you want rather than cutting into them directly.

How the magazines work

Each edition opens with a moodbook, a fashion editorial showing the designs made up and styled, which is a genuinely useful way to see how a garment reads before you commit to it. Behind that sits the technical section, with a checklist for each design: difficulty level, size range, measurements, notions and which sheet the pattern is printed on. The full-size pattern sheets pull out from the middle. Instructions are illustrated step by step in the magazine, and fuller written instructions are available to download from Fibre Mood's own site in several languages.

Editions are numbered and come out through the year, with regular seasonal issues plus occasional larger themed specials. Because they're numbered rather than dated, back issues stay perfectly usable, and a design you spot in an older edition is still there to sew.

Sizing runs from XS to XXXL across the range, with the specific range and measurements printed for each design. Every pattern carries a stated difficulty level, and the designs span straightforward first garments through to more involved coats and tailoring.

Tracing from the sheets

If you haven't used a magazine pattern before, the tracing is less of a chore than it sounds. Lay the sheet flat, find your design's colour and line style from the key, and trace your size onto pattern paper, greaseproof paper or interfacing with a pencil. The advantage over cutting directly is that the sheet stays intact, so you can make the same pattern again in a different size later, which matters if you sew for more than one person.

How many patterns are in a Fibre Mood magazine?

Around a dozen designs per edition, printed on full-size pull-out pattern sheets in the middle of the magazine. The exact number varies between editions, and the larger themed specials contain more. Every design in the issue is listed in the technical section at the back with its size range, difficulty level, notions and the sheet it's printed on, so you can see what you're getting before you buy.

Do I have to trace Fibre Mood patterns?

Yes. The designs share the pull-out sheets, so the lines overlap and you trace off the size and design you want rather than cutting into the sheet. The upside is that the sheets stay intact, so you can come back and make the same design again in a different size, which is useful if you sew for more than one person.

What sizes does Fibre Mood cover?

Sizing is European, so choose from your body measurements rather than the size you buy in shops, and check the finished garment measurements too since the intended fit varies a lot between a fitted dress and an oversized coat.

Are Fibre Mood magazines in English?

The editions we stock are the English ones. Instructions are illustrated step by step within the magazine, and Fibre Mood also publishes fuller written instructions to download free from their own site in several languages, which are worth having open alongside the magazine if a step isn't clear from the diagrams.

Can I still use older editions?

Yes. Editions are numbered rather than dated and the patterns don't expire, so a back issue is just as usable as the current one, and it's often the cheapest way into the range.
