Luxury Ponte Black Plain Double Knitted Viscose Elastane Jersey Dress Close Up Fabric Photo

Ponte Roma Fabric

Ponte Roma is the double jersey that behaves. A firm, stable knit with a little stretch and good recovery, it holds its shape, skims rather than clings, and doesn't curl or fray at the edges, which makes it one of the most forgiving fabrics to sew. This collection covers plain and printed ponte in a wide range of weights and colours. It's made for dresses, ponte trousers, skirts and soft-tailored jackets. Order a sample first.

Ponte Roma, sometimes written Ponti di Roma or Punto di Roma, takes its name from the Italian for "Roman bridge", a nod to the interlocked, double-knit construction that gives it its strength. It's a double jersey, knitted on both sides so it's firmer and more stable than an ordinary single jersey, with a smooth face and a bit of stretch. That stability is the whole point: it holds a shape, covers lumps and bumps, and gives structure without stiffness.

The range spans a real spread of weights and blends, from around 290gsm up to a heavier 350gsm. Polyester-rich ponte is hardwearing and resists pilling, viscose-rich ponte is softer and warmer to wear, and there's cotton ponte for a more natural handle, plus Italian Punto di Milano in the same family. Colours run from wardrobe basics to brights, alongside printed and jacquard ponte for something with more going on. Widths sit around 135cm to 165cm, so check the product page for the exact blend and weight.

What to make with ponte

Ponte's stability makes it a workhorse for structured everyday clothes. Fitted and shift dresses hold their line beautifully, ponte trousers have become a wardrobe staple for comfort with a tailored look, and it's ideal for skirts, soft-tailored blazers, cardigans and workwear. Because it holds its shape rather than clinging, it flatters a close fit without showing every line.

Sewing with ponte

Ponte is a genuinely beginner-friendly knit. It feeds smoothly, holds its shape while you sew, and doesn't fray, so you don't need to finish the edges. Use a ballpoint or stretch needle and a narrow zig-zag or stretch stitch so the seams move with the fabric, and a twin needle gives a tidy hem. Prewash at 30 degrees, as it can shrink, wash inside out to reduce pilling on the viscose blends, and skip the tumble dryer.

What is Ponte Roma fabric?

Ponte Roma (also written Ponti di Roma or Punto di Roma) is a stable double jersey, knitted on both sides so it's firmer than an ordinary jersey. It has a smooth face, a little stretch with good recovery, and it holds its shape without curling or fraying. The name comes from the Italian for "Roman bridge", after its interlocked construction.

What can I make with ponte?

It's ideal for structured everyday clothes: fitted and shift dresses, ponte trousers, skirts, soft-tailored blazers, cardigans and workwear. Its stability holds a clean line, so it flatters a close fit without clinging.

Is Ponte Roma easy to sew?

Yes, it's one of the most beginner-friendly knits. It feeds smoothly, holds its shape and doesn't fray, so the edges don't need finishing. Use a ballpoint or stretch needle and a stretch or narrow zig-zag stitch, and a twin needle for hems.

Does Ponte Roma stretch and hold its shape?

It has a moderate stretch with good recovery, thanks to the elastane in most blends, so it moves comfortably and springs back rather than bagging. The double-knit construction is what makes it hold its shape and skim over lumps and bumps.
