Sewing Bee Season Is Back – And We're Celebrating With Tilly & The Buttons

The wait is over! The Great British Sewing Bee is back on our screens this May 2025, bringing with it a fresh batch of sewing challenges, stitching triumphs and feel-good creativity. Whether you’re a long-time fan or brand new to the show, it’s always a joy to see sewing take centre stage on national telly; and it never fails to inspire us to pick up our scissors and dive into a new project.

Here at Croft Mill, we love everything about the Sewing Bee: the passion, the problem-solving, the personal stories stitched into every garment. And this year, we’re celebrating not just the return of the show, but also one of our favourite Sewing Bee success stories: Tilly Walnes.

From Sewing Bee to Sewing Star

Long before she was the founder of one of the UK’s best-loved independent pattern companies, Tilly Walnes was a contestant on the very first series of The Great British Sewing Bee. Back then, she’d only been sewing for two years; but her creativity, personality, and determination shone through.

Fast forward to today, and Tilly is now a powerhouse in the sewing world. She’s the founder of Tilly and the Buttons, a brand known for stylish, wearable patterns with ultra-clear, beginner-friendly instructions. She's written two bestselling books and she’s been crowned Favourite Sewing Personality at the British Sewing Awards three years in a row.

Tilly’s mission is simple but powerful: to “demystify sewing” and make it more accessible to everyone. And we think that’s worth celebrating!!

Patterns That Inspire Confidence

If The Great British Sewing Bee has got your fingers itching to sew, Tilly’s patterns are a perfect place to start. Whether you're just starting out or looking for a speedy sew between more complex projects, her designs are known for being approachable, stylish and incredibly satisfying to make.

Here are a few of our current favourites (available now at Croft Mill):
