Can you believe it's already time for the grand finale of The Great British Sewing Bee 2023? We've laughed, we've cried, and we've been on the edge of our seats as these talented amateur sewers battled it out week after week. Through these last 10 weeks we’ve seen some beautiful fabrics, some spot on sewing and some cracking designs, but in this final episode the spotlight shone brightly on our final trio: Mia, Asmaa, and Tony. Spoilers ahead!
Pattern Challenge
In this week's pattern challenge the contestants were tasked with creating exquisite Victoriana-style evening dresses. You know, the kind of dress that takes you back in time and oozes old-school glamour.
Sounds dreamy, right? But handling those fabrics looked like a challenge in itself! They were tricky, slippery little devils, especially when the pattern demanded a fitted bodice, puff sleeves, and frilled cuffs.
These dresses needed delicate fabrics to achieve that jaw-dropping effect. Mia nailed it and snagged the top spot with her fabulous garment, winning the judges' praises. Asmaa came in second place, but she had a tough time dealing with a torn zip and a bouncy seam. Tony got third place because his dress had loose seams, and the ruffle at the bottom wasn't sewn correctly. Asmaa and Tony decided to be bold and daring by both choosing the same most difficult fabric to work with. A risk maybe, but this is the final and there’s no messing about.
Transformation Challenge
It was the sewers' final shot to prove their on-the-spot design talent in the transformation challenge. This time, they had to work their magic and turn female party wear into jaw-dropping men's red-carpet outfits, all while channelling the vibes of style icons like Billy Porter, Timothée Chalamet, and Harry Styles.
Can you imagine the excitement and pressure these talented sewers must've felt? Trying to blend elegance and flair to create red-carpet-worthy outfits is no small feat.
Esme and Patrick were on the lookout for something seriously "fun". Asmaa totally smashed it with her outfit. The judges were head over heels for her creation, and it was an absolute win.
Made to Measure
The made to measure round was a Met Gala-worthy challenge with a twist - the sewers had to create 'two-in-one' dresses for their models, who happened to be their friends or family members. And let me tell you, the emotions were running high, with tears flowing in the studio!
There was true magic on the catwalk as these dresses transformed from one jaw-dropping outfit into another. It's like a fashion miracle that requires serious engineering skills and boundless imagination.
Mia had a heart-stopping moment when she realised she'd sewn a part of her dress on backwards, with just five minutes to spare. Panic mode set in and the tears started flowing as her Velcro fix didn't quite hold up. But even in the face of all that drama, her dress made a dramatic transformation from a short black stunner to a dazzling long pink number. The judges loved the flair and the boldness.
Tony's dress was a showstopper too. Patrick couldn't help but praise it as "absolutely phenomenal" and admired the impeccable shape. His fabric choice was totally out there and we really loved the colourful abstract nature of the print.
I don’t think I was prepared for just how stunning Asmaa's show-stopping blue-to-green dress was. Patrick was in awe, calling it a "feat of genius". Esme said: "Asmaa is a really talented sewer, very precise, very neat and in this last challenge she really pulled it off."
Patrick added: "How you engineered that was out of this world – that final gown was spectacular. I am not sure I have seen anything quite so special on Sewing Bee. Spellbinding!"
Talk about leaving a lasting impression.
And the Winner Is...
And that's a wrap on an exhilarating season of The Great British Sewing Bee. Mia, Tony and Asmaa have truly wowed us week after week with their impeccable sewing skills, technical ability and creative flair.
But there can only be one winner, and massive congratulations go to Asmaa for taking the crown. Her victory was thoroughly deserved and her talent shone through in every challenge. From precise construction to ambitious designs, she consistently impressed throughout the competition.
Series 9 gave us everything we love about Sewing Bee: brilliant sewing, plenty of drama, creative risks, and lots of inspiration for our own projects. We can't wait to see what next year's contestants bring to the sewing room.
Until next year, happy sewing!
