Floral & Leaf Fabric

Floral fabric changes character completely depending on what it's printed on. The same rose print reads as crisp and structured on cotton lawn, becomes soft and fluid on viscose, and turns almost painterly on silk. That's part of what makes floral such a rewarding print to shop for properly: two fabrics can carry near-identical motifs and still be suited to entirely different projects.

Scale does a similar job. A tiny ditsy floral, scattered evenly across the cloth, reads almost as a texture from a distance and suits fitted, structured garments. A bold, large-scale floral makes more of a statement and needs the space of a fuller silhouette to be seen properly. Leaf and botanical prints sit at the quieter end of the same family, often paired with floral motifs but sometimes standing alone as a calmer, more graphic alternative.

Types of floral and leaf fabric

Cotton poplin and lawn florals are the most versatile starting point: crisp, easy to cut, and available in everything from fine ditsy prints to bolder statement blooms.

Viscose florals bring drape and movement, a strong choice for wrap dresses, tiered skirts and anything that needs to move with the body rather than hold a structured shape.

Silk and silk-effect florals give the most elevated finish, with a fluid drape and natural sheen that suits eveningwear and occasion pieces.

Leaf and botanical prints work as a floral alternative for anyone after something a little more restrained, and pair well alongside a bolder floral elsewhere in the same project.

Choosing floral scale and colour

Hold a fabric at arm's length before deciding on scale, since a print that looks bold up close can read as a fine texture from normal viewing distance, and the reverse is also true. If you're mixing more than one floral in a single project, varying the scale between them (one ditsy, one bolder) tends to look more deliberate than pairing two prints of a similar size.
