Denim is one of the most versatile fabrics to sew with, but choosing the right type can make all the difference. This post takes a closer look at our newly added denims alongside our tried-and-tested favourites, with guidance on weights, finishes and the patterns that suit them best.
New In: Stripe Denim
Our latest new denim fabric comes in the form of a classic stripe denim, available in three easy-to-wear colourways. Woven from 100% cotton at 230gsm; this midweight denim sits comfortably in the middle ground, breathable enough for everyday wear, but sturdy enough to hold its shape.
The fine stripe gives it a timeless feel rather than anything novelty-led, which makes it a practical choice for a wide range of projects. It works particularly well for everyday garments, children’s wear, bags and utility-style makes where you want structure without heaviness.
Pattern Pairing: Dawn Jeans and Shorts
Our stripe denim pairs beautifully with structured trouser patterns , particularly the Megan Nielsen Dawn jeans and shorts. The midweight handle gives enough body to hold the shape of the pattern, while still being comfortable to wear throughout the day.

Stretch Denim
Stretch denim dressmaking fabric is often the go-to when comfort is a priority. With a small amount of elastane added to cotton, stretch denim moves with you, making it well suited to fitted garments and everyday pieces you’ll actually want to wear.

Lightweight Denim and Chambray
Lightweight denim, generally under 8oz, is softer, easier to sew and lighter to wear. It’s a good option for shirts, dresses, skirts, relaxed trousers and summer makes where movement is more important than structure.
Midweight Denim
Midweight denim remains the most versatile category. With enough structure to hold its shape while staying comfortable, it’s ideal for jeans, skirts and jackets. Recent additions include washed, aged and reworked denims, as well as Italian-produced options that offer something a little different in finish and feel.
Heavyweight Denim
Heavyweight denim is all about structure and durability. With a firmer handle and more body, it’s best suited to projects where you want a strong shape and a hard-wearing finish.
Because of its thickness, heavyweight denim benefits from patterns designed with denim in mind, including appropriate seam allowances and topstitching details. It’s a good choice when longevity matters just as much as appearance.
Italian Deadstock Denim
Italian deadstock denim sits slightly apart from standard ranges. Woven by specialist mills using premium cottons and modern techniques, these fabrics are known for their refined finish, comfortable handle and attention to detail.
What sets Italian deadstock denim apart is the variety, from lighter weights with a softer feel to heavier options with a beautifully balanced structure.
If you’re looking to make something a bit special, Italian deadstock denim is a strong option. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Denim Deconstruct
One of the more distinctive options in the range is deconstructed denim. At 10.5oz, this fabric blends cotton with polyester for durability and shape retention.
Finishing Your Denim Outfits
Denim is easy to wear and just as easy to pair. Jeans and skirts work well with cotton shirting for everyday outfits, or jersey fabrics when you want something more relaxed and comfortable.
