Deadstock fabric is cloth that was originally produced for fashion brands, textile mills and manufacturers but never used. This can include surplus production, cancelled orders and end-of-line collections. Rather than being discarded, these fabrics find a new home with dressmakers, offering access to high-quality cloth that is often unavailable elsewhere.

At Croft Mill, our deadstock fabric collection is sourced from mills and designers across the UK and Europe. You'll find everything from Italian shirtings and luxury suitings to premium cottons, linens, viscoses and distinctive designer fabrics. Many of these fabrics were created for well-known brands, making them a great way to sew with exceptional quality at a sensible price.

One of the things that makes deadstock fabric so popular is its limited availability. Once a roll has sold through, it is unlikely to return. Our collection changes regularly as new fabrics arrive, so there's always something different to discover, whether you're looking for dress fabric, blouse fabric, trouser fabric, coating fabric or something completely unique.

Buying deadstock fabric is also a practical way to make use of existing textile resources. By choosing surplus and unused fabrics, you're helping to keep quality cloth in circulation while creating garments that are less likely to be seen on everyone else.

Why buy deadstock fabric?

Deadstock fabric offers the chance to sew with high-quality cloth that was originally produced for fashion brands, designers and manufacturers. Because these fabrics come from surplus production, cancelled orders and discontinued collections, they are often available at prices well below their original value. Many deadstock fabrics feature premium fibres, distinctive designs and specialist constructions that rarely reach the wider retail market.

For dressmakers, deadstock fabric brings an element of individuality. Quantities are usually limited, meaning you're less likely to see the same fabric elsewhere. Whether you're looking for Italian suiting, designer cottons, shirting fabrics or unusual weaves, deadstock collections often contain fabrics that cannot be reordered once sold out.

Choosing deadstock fabric also helps make use of existing textile resources. Rather than allowing unused cloth to remain in storage or go to waste, these fabrics are given a second opportunity to be transformed into garments and sewing projects. It's a practical way to access quality fabric while making the most of materials already in circulation.

Is deadstock fabric a sustainable choice?

Choosing deadstock fabric can be a more considered option than buying newly produced cloth because it makes use of fabric that already exists. It helps keep usable materials in circulation and reduces waste from the textile industry. While deadstock fabric is often associated with more sustainable sewing, it should not be viewed as a sustainability certification in itself.

Is deadstock fabric limited stock?

In most cases, yes. Deadstock fabrics are usually available in finite quantities because they come from surplus stock, cancelled orders or discontinued collections. Once a fabric has sold out, it is often impossible to source again, so it's worth ordering the full amount you need if you're planning a project.

What types of fabric are typically available as deadstock?

The range changes constantly, which is part of the appeal. Deadstock collections can include dress fabrics, shirting fabrics, suitings, cottons, linens, jerseys, coatings and occasional luxury fibres such as silk and wool.
