Buying dressmaking fabric online at Croft Mill

We're a specialist fabric retailer based in Lancashire, with a background in the textile trade that goes back decades. Much of our range is sourced directly from mills and design houses in the UK, Italy and across Europe - including ex-designer pieces, mill-end stock and deadstock fabrics that wouldn't ordinarily be available to home sewers.

Our collection covers the full spectrum of dressmaking cloth: lightweight cottons for summer makes, breathable linens and viscose challis for year-round garments, jersey and knit fabrics for comfortable everyday sewing, silk and luxury fibres for special occasions, and wool and wool blends for tailored and cooler-season pieces.

All fabrics are sold by the metre and cut in one continuous length. We recommend ordering a sample before buying larger quantities - colour and handle don't always translate perfectly on screen, and getting the feel of a fabric before you commit is always worthwhile. What types of fabric does Croft Mill stock?

Our range is sourced from mills and manufacturers across the UK and Europe, with new fabrics arriving regularly throughout the year.

Can I order fabric samples before buying?

Yes. Ordering a sample is often the best way to check a fabric's colour, weight, texture and drape before purchasing a larger quantity. Sample availability is shown on individual product pages, where you'll also find detailed information about each fabric.

What is the minimum amount of fabric I can buy?

Most of our fabrics can be purchased from half a metre. Fabric is cut as one continuous piece wherever possible, so if you order multiple units, you'll usually receive the fabric in a single length. Any exceptions will be clearly stated on the product page.

How do I choose the right fabric for my sewing pattern?

The best place to start is with the fabric recommendations provided by the pattern designer. Woven fabrics such as cotton, linen and viscose are generally used for patterns without stretch, while jersey and knit fabrics are designed for patterns that rely on stretch for fit and comfort. Our product descriptions include information about weight, drape and suggested uses to help you find a suitable match.
