Waxed Cotton Eiger 6oz Caramel Water Resistant Coating Fabric Roll

Waxed Cotton Fabric

Waxed cotton is a traditional outdoor cloth, valued for its natural water resistance and rugged character. Our collection runs from light 4oz weights suited to jackets through to heavy 12oz cloth for bags and aprons, in a wide choice of colours and finishes.

It's a hard-wearing, practical choice for countrywear, coats, bags and accessories. Many lines are available in larger quantities for bulk and commercial projects, so please contact us to discuss larger orders. Order a sample to feel the weight and finish.

Waxed cotton is cotton cloth treated with a wax finish that repels water while keeping the fabric breathable and flexible. It's been a countrywear and outdoor staple for generations because it's durable, weatherproof enough for everyday use and develops character with age. Weight and finish are the two things to choose by.

Choosing by weight

  • 4oz–6oz: lighter and more flexible, ideal for jackets, coats and garments.
  • 8oz–9oz: a sturdier mid-weight for hard-wearing outerwear, hats and structured bags.
  • 12oz: heavyweight cloth for bags, aprons, holdalls and items that take real wear.

Finishes

The range includes different wax finishes, from the traditional oil-cloth feel to drier, less sticky finishes such as Sylkoil and more modern, lower-residue treatments. A drier finish is often more comfortable for garments, while a traditional finish gives the classic look and handle. Check the product page for the finish and colour, which now go well beyond the usual brown and navy.

Sewing and caring for waxed cotton

Waxed cotton sews on a domestic machine, though a heavier needle and a longer stitch help on the thicker weights, and clips are better than pins, which leave permanent holes. It's water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, and shouldn't be machine washed or dry-cleaned, as this strips the wax. Wipe it clean and re-proof with a fabric wax when the water resistance fades. Always follow the guidance on the individual product page.

Is waxed cotton waterproof or just water-resistant?

Waxed cotton is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. The wax finish repels rain and keeps you dry in most conditions while letting the fabric breathe, but in prolonged heavy rain it isn't a sealed waterproof like a coated technical fabric. Re-proofing keeps the water resistance at its best.

Can you wash waxed cotton?

No, waxed cotton shouldn't be machine washed or dry-cleaned, as both strip the wax that gives it water resistance. Instead, wipe it clean with a damp cloth and cold water, and re-proof with a fabric wax when needed. Follow the care guidance on the individual product page.

How do you re-wax waxed cotton, and how often?

Apply a proofing wax made for waxed cotton, working it into the cloth and warming it gently so it absorbs evenly, then leave it to cure. How often depends on use, but once the fabric starts to look dry or stops repelling water, it's time to re-proof. Garments worn often may need it once a season.

What weight do I need for a jacket versus a bag?

Lighter 4oz to 6oz waxed cotton is more flexible and suits jackets and coats, while heavier 8oz to 12oz cloth gives the durability wanted for bags, aprons and holdalls. Match the weight to how much wear and structure the item needs, and order a sample if you're unsure.

Can you sew waxed cotton on a domestic machine?

Yes. Lighter weights sew much like a firm cotton, and heavier weights are manageable with a stronger needle, a longer stitch and a steady pace. Use clips rather than pins, as pin holes are permanent in the waxed surface, and a non-stick or walking foot helps the fabric feed smoothly.
