GBSB Ep8 Inspiration: Stitched from the Page
From Sherlock Holmes tweeds and reworked school uniforms to romantic Jane Austen dresses, explore the fabrics that inspired Literary Icons Week on The Great British Sewing Bee.
This is not your average white cotton poplin. This is Superior 50s cotton, spun at the historic Tower Mill in Dukinfield by English Fine Cottons, the mill responsible for bringing commercial cotton spinning back to Britain after an absence of more than half a century. In a part of the country once at the very heart of Cottonopolis, cotton is being spun again using modern technology alongside generations of textile knowledge. The result here is an exceptionally fine, beautifully smooth white cotton poplin with a dense, precise weave and the sort of quality that becomes immediately apparent when you handle it.
At approximately 200gsm, this is more substantial than a conventional lightweight shirting poplin, with a superbly crisp handle, immaculate surface and enough structure to create exceptionally clean seams, collars, cuffs, pleats and gathers. It would make an outstanding white shirt, structured blouse, shirt dress or full-skirted dress, as well as heirloom sewing and special projects where an ordinary cotton simply won't do. British cotton spinning of this calibre is now extraordinarily unusual, and having fabric made from yarn spun at Tower Mill makes this a genuinely special piece of modern British textile manufacturing.
