Advantages of Cotton Dress Fabrics
Cotton has been a staple for many thousands of years to create fabric used for a comprehensive array of different garments. It remains to this day one of the most widely-used fabrics across the globe. In this edition of the Croft Mill blog, we'll be looking at some of the many advantages provided by cotton fabrics that have made them so successful.
Cotton is recognised as one of the strongest fabrics, boasting an impressively-high tensile strength. Garments made from cotton are thus long-lasting, standing up to repeated wearing without danger of ripping. Cotton is up to 30% stronger when it is wet, allowing garments made using the material to withstand repeated washing.
Cotton dress fabrics trap air between their fibres, helping to protect the wearer from extremes of temperature; clothes made from cotton keep you warm when the weather is cool and vice versa. These qualities are further enhanced by the fact that cotton fibres help to hold the fabric away from the skin, allowing more air to be trapped between.
Exceptionally breathable and absorbent, cotton helps to transmit moisture away from the body, keeping it from building up on the skin. This makes the fabric especially useful for wearing when the weather is hot or when exercising. According to the International Forum for Cotton Promotion, cotton can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in moisture before it feels damp.
Cotton very rarely causes an allergic reaction and so is especially suitable for those with sensitive skin. It is for this reason that cotton is very often used to create medical products like gauze and bandages.
Cotton is a superlatively-soft fabric and so is a delight to wear, even directly against the skin. It is thus a very popular fabric for creating socks and undergarments.
One of the most versatile fabrics, available in countless different colours, patterns and styles, cotton can be used to create pretty much any garment you can imagine. It's also perfect for craft projects and for making a wide range of soft furnishings.
