A Practical Guide to Cotton Lawn Fabric
Cotton lawn is one of those fabrics you come back to, light, breathable and easy to sew. A guide to how it feels, what to make and where to start.
This is one of those fabrics that doesn’t shout for attention but ends up being the one you keep reaching for. A dark, almost-black brown made up of mixed threads that only really show themselves when you get up close, woven into a soft herringbone with a slightly loose structure that gives it a relaxed, cosy feel.
There’s a bit of give in it too, more across the width than along the selvedge, which just takes the edge off when wearing it. It’s warm without being heavy, soft without feeling floppy, and ideal for jackets, overshirts or easy trousers that feel as good as they look. The sort of fabric that quietly proves itself once it’s made up, and probably gets worn more than anything else in the wardrobe.
