Description

Somewhere between deep teal and dark slate, this petrol shade has the cool, moody depth of a North Sea afternoon. In the photo it reads as a dark blue-green with a slightly smoky cast, and the soft sheen on the face brings out more of the green wherever the light falls. Across the whole width runs a repeat of small rounded teardrop shapes, each one gently padded so the surface has a soft, raised relief. The stitching sits a shade darker than the cloth, so the outline of every little shape shows a touch more clearly here than on the darker colours. At 200gsm and 145cm wide it has a cushioned, substantial handle and enough spring to hold its shape rather than drape.

It's water repellent, so drizzle and spray bead on the surface and slide off rather than soaking through. Because the quilting stitches pass right through the cloth it isn't waterproof, so it's the one for blustery coastal walks and damp mornings at the bus stop, not a soaking on the fells. What makes petrol such a good choice is that it behaves like a neutral without looking like one. It's sober enough to wear with grey marl, navy and denim, yet it comes alive next to mustard, ochre or a bright scarf, and it hides the odd splash far better than a pale shade.

What to make with it

This is a natural fit for light outer layers that need a bit of body: a hip length jacket, a collarless coat or a sleeveless gilet to wear over knitwear. The Tessuti Soho Coat suits it well, as the quilted texture gives those clean lines a little warmth and interest, and the Wardrobe By Me Unisex Painter Jacket makes a practical, pocket-heavy layer you'll reach for all autumn. For something simpler, The Assembly Line Cap Sleeve Vest would make a smart padded vest top to layer over a long sleeve tee.

Because the cloth is firm and already padded, choose patterns with few seams and minimal gathering. Bind the raw edges with bias tape or line the garment so the quilting stays neat inside, and keep the iron on a low setting, pressing through a cloth so the padding isn't flattened.

Care & washing

Allow 2-10% shrinkage to be on the safe side. Wash the fabric before making up, in the same way you'll wash the finished make, drying methods included, so it settles once rather than after it's sewn.

Test a sample area first to find the most suitable way to wash it. We can't accept liability for fabrics washed or treated incorrectly.

Dry Clean - Any Solvent Except Trichloroethylene.
